The Opportunity
The Internal Medicine Residency Program at SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital has been training physicians to practice with skill, compassion, and integrity since its inception in 1964. Rooted in SSM Health's mission to reveal the healing presence of God through exceptional health care the program has earned a lasting reputation for graduating internists who serve their patients and communities with excellence.
SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital now seeks an experienced physician leader to serve as Program Director and carry that legacy forward. Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, the Program Director will lead an established, ACGME-accredited program with the faculty, academic depth, and institutional commitment to shape the next generation of internists.

Position Summary
The Program Director provides overall leadership for the residency its educational quality, accreditation standing, and reputation and integrates the program with the department's clinical and academic mission. The role carries no less than 50% protected time (0.5 FTE) for program administration and education, consistent with ACGME requirements, with the balance dedicated to clinical practice and teaching. The position includes an academic faculty appointment at a rank commensurate with experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the organization, direction, and continuous improvement of the residency across all participating sites
- Direct curriculum design and implementation to meet ACGME and ABIM standards
- Oversee resident recruitment, evaluation, promotion, and graduation, including the Clinical Competency Committee
- Recruit, develop, and lead a high-quality teaching faculty
- Ensure a learning environment that balances education and clinical service and supports resident well-being
- Maintain the program's accreditation, including accurate reporting and ADS submissions, in partnership with the GME office
- Foster scholarship and a culture of inquiry among residents and faculty
Qualifications
Required
- MD, DO, or equivalent; board certification in Internal Medicine, with maintenance of ABIM certification
- Eligibility for an unrestricted Missouri medical license
- Qualifications meeting ACGME program director eligibility, including the requisite educational and administrative experience
- Eligibility for academic faculty appointment
Preferred
- Prior GME leadership experience (e.g., associate program director, core faculty, or clerkship director)
- A record of teaching excellence and scholarly activity
- Demonstrated success building faculty and improving program outcomes
