Job Summary The Medical Physics Specialist 2 works under the Director of Medical Physics & Radiation Safety. This position involves assisting with handling, monitoring, and record-keeping of radioactive materials from order to disposal for human and non-human use. The specialist performs public exposure and radiation survey measurements for brachytherapy and radionuclide therapy patients. They maintain documentation according to Texas Administrative Code (TAC) rules and license requirements. The specialist helps ensure radiation safety practices are followed, evaluates radiology equipment for quality, and ensures systems meet regulatory and manufacturer specifications within Texas.

Essential Functions of the Role

• Reviews and helps ensure radiation safety practices in areas using radioactive materials. Assists in developing and evaluating radiation safety procedures. Ensures good radiation practice and minimizes exposure to patients and medical personnel.

• Arranges for calibration of radiation monitoring instruments. Records calibrations and dates in computer and maintains calibrations certificates.

• Able to conduct performance evaluations of patient imaging equipment.

• Using appropriate instruments, surveys radiation source implant patients and their surroundings. Restricts and posts rooms as required by TAC. Surveys patients and rooms after implant removal. Maintains documentation of results.

• Assists in maintaining documents required by Texas and Federal regulations. This includes sublicenses, applications, and amendments for radioactive materials. It also includes surveys, total inventory of radioactive sources, and records of in-services given. Assists in developing radiation safety procedures.

• Orders, receives, and processes radioactive material shipments. Receives shipments from vendors and inspects packages for leakage and integrity. Monitors radiation levels around the package.

• Arranges for the disposal of radioactive wastes to meet Texas and Federal regulations. Verifies correct packaging, labels drum contents, records amounts and numbers, and maintains shipping manifests. Manages temporary storage facilities by keeping accurate inventories, segregating wastes, performing surveys, preparing drums for shipment, and maintaining records.

• Performs dosimetry calculations and measures exposure levels for patients and the public. Ensures regulatory standards are met and doses minimized under a licensed medical physicist's direction.

• Serves as an instructor for staff, physicians, residents, fellows, and technologists.

Key Success Factors

• Knowledge of imaging equipment, processes and quality standards.

• Knowledge of radiation testing, safety and compliance.

• Able to conduct performance evaluations of patient imaging equipment under the supervision of a licensed medical physicist.

• Able to box and ship radioactive hazardous materials following state and federal rules.

• Able to communicate appropriate radiation safety concerns to the facilities in a manner that will facilitate improvements.

• Able to properly respond to radiation exposure from area or machine-radiation surveys, cleanup of radioactive spills and patient excreta, etc.

• Able to understand radiation safety and set an example for fellow employees.

• Able to take call, if required.
