Description
The Fellowship in Medical Ethics at Northwell Health emphasizes the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities Clinical Ethics Task Force core knowledge and competencies in ethics consultation. This clinical fellowship is designed to prepare the fellow to achieve independence as a clinical bioethicist.
The fellowship entails supervised clinical responsibilities for ethics consults at North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Cohen Children’s Medical Center, Huntington Hospital, South Shore University Hospital, Staten Island University Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, Staten Island University Hospital, Peconic Bay Medical Center, Glen Cove Hospital and Zucker Hillside Hospital.
Academic work will include completion of Hofstra University’s School of Law Bioethics course or fulfilling requirements for a masters in Bioethics.
A scholarly effort is expected in the performance of a research project. Additional responsibilities include preparation for Ethics Committee meetings and for conference meetings and presentations at various departments at the mentioned institutions and at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.
Job Description
Under supervision, conducts academic research, and participates in advanced training in one or more aspects of Bioethics, including ethical intervention, assessment, and recommendation.
Job Responsibility
Conducts research and performs leading-edge technological investigation for the purpose of acquiring and using new knowledge, under supervision.
Undertakes experiments and gathers and interprets data.
Performs patient consultation and reviews medical information pertinent to ethical issue.
Collaborates with the treating health care team regarding clinical history and treatment issues.
Aids review of findings and potential recommendations with supervising physician.
Generates consultation report for review/approval by attending physician.
Facilitates meetings with patients, family members, health care team, and administrators to clarify and resolve ethical issues, as needed.
Participates in committee meetings and in-service education for residents, medical students, and other health providers; participates in continued Bioethics training activities and scholarly writing.
Drafts studies or summaries of findings, submits research for publication or peer review, and presents at conferences or related events.

Master’s Degree required, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
