- Medical Director, Correctional Care
Description
Denver Health is seeking a physician leader to serve as Medical Director of Correctional Care, providing clinical and operational leadership for health care services at the Downtown Detention Center and Denver County Jail. This role combines direct patient care with leadership of physicians and clinicians, quality and patient safety oversight, provider recruitment, and collaboration with nursing, operational, and Denver Sheriff Department leadership.
Correctional health care involves higher levels of medical and behavioral health acuity, social complexity, and security considerations than a traditional ambulatory setting. Strong clinical judgment, environmental awareness, communication, quality-improvement experience, and stakeholder management are essential for success.
The Opportunity
Provide preventive, acute, and chronic medical care, including management of complex illness and referral to higher levels of care when needed.
Provide clinical and administrative supervision of physicians and other clinicians and support recruitment to maintain access to care.
Oversee quality and safety activities, including mortality review, clinical protocols, patient safety trends, utilization review, and risk management.
Serve as a primary on-site clinical liaison with Denver Sheriff Department and correctional leadership, in partnership with operational leadership.
Partner with the Senior Health Administrator to support ACA, NCCHC, and state and federal regulatory compliance.
Supervise and educate medical students, residents, interns, and other learners when applicable.
Schedule & Leadership
The Medical Director receives eight hours of administrative time each week and participates in approximately one on-call night per week and one on-call weekend per month. The role reports to the Chair of Family Medicine and works closely with the Chairs of Psychiatry and Dental, the Chief Medical Officer, Chief Ambulatory Officer, and correctional health operational leadership.
Qualifications
MD or DO from an accredited medical school and current physician licensure through the applicable State Medical Board.
Current BLS/CPR certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
1-3 years of outpatient clinical experience with demonstrated leadership experience, including leading clinical initiatives or oversight of advanced practice providers.
Ability to perform privileged procedures appropriate to the Denver Health Department of Family Medicine.
Preferred: 1-3 years of correctional health care experience and Certified Correctional Health Professional (CCHP) credential through the National Commission on Correctional Health Care.
