This appointment offers a rare opportunity to lead an exceptionally accomplished Division of Nephrology and shape its future across its clinical, research, and educational missions.
For nearly seven decades, the Division of Nephrology has occupied a prominent place in the history of academic nephrology. Founded by Donald W. Seldin, whose vision helped establish UT Southwestern as a leading academic medical center, the Division has subsequently been led by Floyd Rector, Juha Kokko, Robert Alpern, Peter Igarashi, Orson Moe, and most recently Samir Parikh, now Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine and currently President of the American Society of Nephrology. Across successive generations, the Division has trained physician-scientists and academic leaders who now serve throughout the United States and internationally, establishing a tradition of scientific excellence, innovation, and mentorship that continues to define the program today.
Today, its faculty combine a broad and growing clinical enterprise with an internationally recognized research program and a longstanding commitment to physician-scientist training. Faculty provide comprehensive nephrology care across William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, Parkland Memorial Hospital, the Dallas VA Medical Center, and an expanding regional clinical network while pursuing fundamental, translational, and clinical research spanning the full spectrum of kidney disease. Building upon this exceptionally strong foundation, the next Division Chief will have the opportunity to advance the Division through strategic faculty recruitment, expansion of its research activities, continued growth of its clinical programs, and mentorship of the next generation of academic leaders. The Division Chief will join UT Southwestern at a time of exceptional institutional momentum, supported by significant resources, a collaborative culture, and a shared commitment to continued growth, innovation, and academic excellence, while playing an important role in shaping the institution’s future.
Reporting directly to the Chair of Internal Medicine, the Division Chief will provide strategic leadership across the Division's clinical, educational, and research missions. The successful candidate will recruit and mentor outstanding faculty, strengthen the Division's research enterprise, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, expand clinical programs, and ensure continued excellence in the education of medical students, residents, and fellows. This is an opportunity to help shape the future of nephrology within one of the nation's leading departments of internal medicine.
The ideal candidate will be an accomplished academic nephrologist with a distinguished record of achievement in research, clinical care, and/or medical education, together with demonstrated success in academic leadership. Candidates should have experience recruiting and mentoring faculty, leading complex clinical and academic programs, and articulating a compelling vision for the future of an academic division. Board certification in Nephrology, eligibility for Texas medical licensure, and scholarly accomplishments consistent with appointment as Professor are expected.
