Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine, Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine and Population Science, is recruiting academic general internists interested in academic general internal medicine and medical education.

The Division brings together clinical care, education, research, and community partnerships to improve health outcomes for all people. Three integrated domains, one shared purpose — we collaborate across care, research, and education to advance health outcomes. The division is recruiting primarily to support the an expansion of clinical care: expansion of the inpatient general internal medicine service, growth of the resident continuity clinic,  ambulatory general medicine faculty practices at both the University and County health clinic sites, and a faculty transitional/complex care clinic.

Our faculty teach learners across the spectrum of medical education, including UAB Internal Medicine Residency, the UAB Heersink School of Medicine undergraduate medical education curriculum, and across the Division's fellowship programs.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities may include any or all of the following: direct patient care in outpatient settings at any of our sites; attending on the Division's inpatient general internal medicine teaching services at UAB Hospital or the Birmingham VA Medical Center; and outpatient resident precepting at UAB, the Birmingham VA Medical Center, and/or Cooper Green Mercy Health System. Call expectations will depend on specific clinical assignments.  

Depending on skills and preferences, teaching opportunities may include ward attending and ambulatory precepting as above, didactic and small-group teaching of medical students and residents, and mentorship of residents and medical students. Faculty participate in the Division's medical-education scholarship and graduate medical education committees. Expectations for clinician educators include small and large group teaching in educational conferences and morning reports. Applicants with education fellowship training or experience in clinician educator roles may be eligible for leadership roles or protected time for teaching.

While opportunities for research are available, dedicated research effort is not a requirement of the position. We aim to support faculty interested in medical education scholarship, quality improvement, population health, or health services research appropriate to a position as Clinician-Educator.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

•  MD or DO from an accredited institution
•  Board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine
•  Demonstrated commitment to medical education and the care of medically underserved populations
•  Eligibility for Alabama medical licensure

Preferred Qualifications

•  Prior experience in academic general internal medicine, hospital medicine, or primary care, including clinical practice, fellowship training, or faculty positions.
•  Evidence of teaching excellence (formal awards, learner evaluations, curriculum development, or medical-education scholarship)
•  Experience in quality improvement, population-health, or health-services research
•  Experience with multidisciplinary team-based care
