Job Description
The University of Alabama at Birmingham Health System is seeking a highly qualified physician informatics leader to become its next chief medical information officer (CMIO). Reporting to the chief information officer (CIO), the CMIO will serve as the liaison between the clinical staff and Heath System Information Services (HSIS) and will support the CIO in the continued integration of information technology into hospital and ambulatory practice settings to promote the highest possible quality, safety, and evidence-based patient care.

This physician leader will have responsibility for physician engagement, adoption, standardization and optimization of clinical systems. About 90% of the responsibilities of this role will be dedicated to CMIO duties, with 10% being dedicated to clinical practice. The CMIO will play a key leadership role in the optimization of health information systems by building on UAB Medicine’s strong foundation of advanced clinical care. The CMIO will review proposed health information technology initiatives in terms of their impact on clinicians in all venues of care, working closely with HSIS staff, departmental informatics teams, clinicians, and other stakeholders, while being sensitive to organizational priorities and fiscal impact. The successful candidate will be a skilled health care professional with experience in a complex academic medical environment.

The applicant must be a licensed physician with recent medical practice who is eligible for an unrestricted Alabama medical license. The ideal candidate will also have significant recent experience implementing, optimizing, and supporting Cerner PowerChart. A graduate degree in medical informatics and one year of work experience in medical informatics is preferred. In lieu of graduate training in medical informatics, a minimum equivalent of three years of full-time experience in medical informatics systems will be required.
