A radiology nurse, also referred to as a medical imaging nurse, is a nursing professional that cares for patients that must undergo diagnostic imaging procedures and radiation therapy. Common diagnostic imaging tests include x-rays, computed tomography scans (CT scans), magnetic resonance imaging scans (MRIs), and ultrasounds. Using these imaging tests, medical professionals are able to see inside a patient's body, enabling them to easily diagnose illnesses and suspected injuries.
A radiology nurse works as a member of a larger team of medical professionals, including physicians, specialists, other nurses, and radiology technicians. As radiology nurses work in conjunction with other healthcare professionals, being able to effectively communicate is essential. With the amount of collaboration between other medical professionals and a high turnover in patients, one must be easily adaptable. A radiology nurse is primarily responsible for the assessment, planning, and care of patients who undergo diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
The primary role of a radiology nurse is to care for patients in need of radiology procedures. Other duties include:
- Assessing patients prior to their procedures by studying patient medical histories and speaking with both patients and their physicians
- Helping patients better understand the procedures they need and serving as a liaison between the patient, nursing staff, and physician.
- observation of conscious sedation patients undergoing MRI examinations
- oversight of Nuclear Medicine Lexiscan studies, CT Cardiac exams, and MRI pacemaker studies port access and deaccess
- lab draw for patients also needing blood draw during visit.
- Explaining the procedures needed by answering any questions/concerns patients and family may have.
- Responsible for instructing patients on what to do before a particular procedure.
- Responsible for preparing the patient on the day of procedure.
- Reassessing patients after their procedure and providing care until they are ready to be discharged.
The Clinical Nurse reflects the mission, vision, and values of Indiana University Health, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards. The registered professional clinical nurse (RN) is accountable and responsible for the provision and coordination of competent, evidence-based care along the care continuum, which includes assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The clinical nurse participates in decision-making, teaching, mentoring, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to advance the patient plan of care, achieve outcomes and enhance operational efficiency. The nurse adheres to the ANA Scope and Standards of Professional Nursing and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements.
Qualifications
- Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelors of Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license.
- Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.
- Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
- Other advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
- Education: The Registered Nurse (RN) must have graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.
Exceptions: Candidates who have not graduated from a nationally accredited program may be considered if they possess more than two years of acute care experience. Such exceptions are subject to review and approval by the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO).
