Position Summary
Reedsburg Area Medical Center is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) to perform a wide range of clinical laboratory testing and specimen collection activities. This role supports physicians and care teams by ensuring the accuracy, quality, and timeliness of diagnostic testing.
The MLT works in a fast-paced, patient-focused laboratory environment and is responsible for testing blood and body fluids, maintaining quality control standards, and supporting excellent patient care.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform laboratory testing across multiple disciplines, including:
- Hematology and coagulation
- Chemistry and special chemistry
- Immunohematology (including crossmatching)
- Serology and microbiology
- Urinalysis and body fluid analysis
- Process and prepare specimens for in-house and reference laboratory testing
- Perform phlebotomy procedures for neonatal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients
- Verify patient identification and ensure proper specimen collection and labeling
- Evaluate test results for accuracy, critical values, and the need for repeat testing
- Perform quality control procedures and document corrective actions as needed
- Conduct preventive maintenance, calibrations, and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments
- Maintain accurate documentation and charge capture per regulatory requirements
- Follow infection control, safety, and bloodborne pathogen policies
- Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, patients, and laboratory staff
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and continuing education
- Serve as a preceptor for new employees or students as assigned
- Neonatal (0-30 days)
- Infant (31 days-1 year)
- Pediatric (1-12 years)
- Adolescent (13-18 years)
- Adult (19-65 years)
- Geriatric (66+ years)
- Graduate of an accredited two-year Medical Laboratory Technician program or equivalent (including military training programs)
- Certification as an MLT or eligibility to obtain certification through ASCP, AMT, NCA, ISCLT, AAB, or HEW certification
- BLS Certification
- Ability to distinguish colors (color vision required)
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Previous clinical laboratory experience
- Phlebotomy experience
- Experience working in a hospital or clinical lab setting
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- Frequent standing and walking
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
- Frequent use of fine motor skills and venipuncture techniques
- Continuous use of laboratory instrumentation and computer systems
- Regular exposure to bloodborne pathogens, sharps, chemicals, and moving equipment
- Work performed primarily in an indoor, patient-care environment
